چکیده

In Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993) both language acquisition and language typology can be accommodated. The basic assumption is that constraints are universal, but that the rankings of these constraints are language particular. For language typology the idea is that different rankings reflect different (possible) languages. For acquisition the idea is that the learner needs to acquire the languagespecific ranking of his mother tongue. The assumption here, like in most other work on acquisition to date (cf. Gnanadesikan 1995, Tesar & Smolensky 1996), is that structural constraints initially outrank faithfulness constraints. The grammar in this state prefers structurally unmarked outputs over faithful ones. By promoting faithfulness in the ranking, or by demoting structural constraints, the outputs can become more marked and more faithful to their inputs.

The Effect of Word Meaning on Speech DysFluency in Adults with Developmental Stuttering

Objectives: Stuttering is one of the most prevalent speech and language disorders. Symptomology of stuttering has been surveyed from different aspects such as biological, developmental, environmental, emotional, learning and linguistic. Previous researches in English-speaking people have suggested that some linguistic features such as word meanings may play a role in the frequency of speech non...

Probabilistic Context-Free Grammars for Phonology

We present a phonological probabilistic contextfree grammar, which describes the word and syllable structure of German words. The grammar is trained on a large corpus by a simple supervised method, and evaluated on a syllabification task achieving 96.88% word accuracy on word tokens, and 90.33% on word types. We added rules for English phonemes to the grammar, and trained the enriched grammar o...

Improving Syllabification Models with Phonotactic Knowledge

We report on a series of experiments with probabilistic context-free grammars predicting English and German syllable structure. The treebank-trained grammars are evaluated on a syllabification task. The grammar used by Müller (2002) serves as point of comparison. As she evaluates the grammar only for German, we reimplement the grammar and experiment with additional phonotactic features. Using b...

The role of markedness in the acquisition of complex prosodic structures by German-Spanish bilinguals

A tendency to limit prosodic words (PW) to the size of a metrical foot has often been acknowledged in early stages of acquisition and truncation has been shown to accomplish this size constraint. Interestingly, after the onefoot stage, children acquiring English or Dutch tend to enlarge their productions by one foot, whereas at least for children acquiring Spanish, a stage, in which PWs compris...

Validation and Regression Testing for a Cross-linguistic Grammar Resource

We present a validation methodology for a cross-linguistic grammar resource which produces output in the form of small grammars based on elicited typological descriptions. Evaluating the resource entails sampling from a very large space of language types, the type and range of which preclude the use of standard test suites development techniques. We produce a database from which gold standard t...
